Never underestimate the power of a familiar face. Especially when you're 1,200 miles from home.
Initially Keridan and I didn't plan to go all the way to the top of California, but that plan quickly changed.
My older brother Tyler, his fiancé Zoie, and my niece Zia, live on a gorgeous piece of land close to Whitethorn, California. They live in California for half of the year and in Texas the other half. Sounds nice, huh?
It was only right that Tyler show us around No-Cal therefore it wasn't too hard to talk us into coming all the way up there. Why would we pass up the opportunity to see Northern California from the half-local himself. It is gorgeous to say the least & I think you'll agree after looking at some of these pictures. Between the redwoods that are unexplainably big **like twenty-three people hand in hand to wrap around ONE, big.** the black sands beaches, and the above the clouds views, it was truly an amazing experience.
Pictures just don't do it justice.
We arrived late-ish and just in time for dinner. Tyler grilled for us, we gathered around a little campfire, and just hung out that first night.
Then the next day when we woke up we were ready to explore. We grabbed breakfast to-go at a local eatery called Cafe Dolce. Then went to the beach for a little morning picnic.

Black Sands Beach at Shelter Cove is about 45 minutes from their house. It's not a swimming or surfing beach, hint the DANGER sign below. This is actually an extremely deadly beach. Gorgeous, but deadly "In March of this year, another rogue wave snatched a 13-year-old Montana boy off a rock at Black Sands Beach and his father, though managing to save his son, drowned to the rescue." See the article here.
After our picnic at the Black Sands Beach we went to the next beach a few miles down the road. I'm not sure what this one was called but it was just as pretty and there was a lot more ocean life, including sea lions.
